SERMON NOTES
Value in Speaking in Tongues
Mark 16:17-18 New King James Version (NKJV)
17 And these signs will follow those who [a]believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they[b] will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Signs follow the believer (you & me are believers) The Lord’s job to confirm His word with these signs following you & me
One of these signs (evidence) speaking in other tongues
Acts 1:4-5 New Living Translation (NLT)
4 Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. 5 John baptized with[a] water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
The Holy Spirit is a gift promised by the Father
Different baptism than water
Be baptized with the Holy Ghost
Acts 2:1-4 New Living Translation (NLT)
The Holy Spirit Comes
2 On the day of Pentecost[a] all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. 3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages,[b] as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.
Holy Spirit is for the Believers
Everyone was filled with the Holy Ghost
Speaking in tongues is evidence, a sign of being filled with the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit gives them the ability
John 4:24 New King James Version (NKJV)
24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
John 14:16-17 New King James Version (NKJV)
16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another [a]Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
The Holy Spirit is just not an initial sign that you are a believer, but a continual experience that God is in you for the rest of your life
Assists us in worshiping God, constant reminder of His presence
You are the temple of the Holy Ghost
Example how would you act, if Jesus was right next to you all the time
Romans 8:26-27 New King James Version (NKJV)
26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession [a]for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
Keeps selfishness out of our prayers or unscriptural prayers out
We pray the perfect will of God
Sometimes we don’t know what to pray
When you pray in tongues it is the Holy Spirit praying within you
The Holy Spirit gives you the utterance, you do the talking
Sometimes when we pray out of our minds it isn’t God’s best for us, but God will permit it
wasn’t God’s will for Israel to have a king, but God permitted it
Jude 20 New King James Version (NKJV)
20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,
Praying in tongues stimulates faith (most holy faith)
Helps us trust God more, because we have to trust God with what the next word will be
Trusting in line with God will help us trust God with another area of your life
1 Corinthians 14:2 New King James Version (NKJV)
2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
Speaking in tongues is speaking to God
Divine secrets, mysteries
God has given to the church a divine supernatural way of communication with Him
1 Corinthians 14:4 New King James Version (NKJV)
4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
The word edified means Charge like a battery
Build yourself up spiritually
1 Corinthians 14:14-18 New King James Version (NKJV)
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. 16 Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say? 17 For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.
18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;
You can pray in the spirit, sing in the spirit, bless in the spirit, give thanks in the spirit
You give thanks well
Paul, says he speaks in the spirit more than all of you (divine communication with God
