SERMON NOTES

Holy Communion- Health & Forgiveness

Introduction: Today we are going to take Holy Communion

  • All 4 gospels and Paul write about Holy Communion

    • Should show us that we need to place a high amount of importance on this

Acts 2:40-43 New King James Version

A Vital Church Grows

40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.” 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.

  • The early Christians continued steadfastly in the breaking of the bread (communion)

  • There is something about communion that many of us have last site of or don’t put enough emphasis on

Psalm 105:37 New King James Version

37 He also brought them out with silver and gold,

And there was none feeble among His tribes.

  • Estimated 2.5-3 million Jewish people coming out of Egypt

  • No one feeble, sick person among them

  • Why? They just partook of the Passover supper

    • Jesus instituted communion at the last supper, which was the Passover supper

    • Supernatural channel of health and healing

    • Israelites left healthy, healed, and whole

1 Corinthians 11:27-34

Examine Yourself

27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and [c]blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks [d]in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the [e]Lord’s body30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many [f]sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

  • Unworthy manner- not understanding what Holy Communion represents to us

    • Not knowing that it is the key channel God gets health, healing, wholeness to us

    • Not knowing that it represents the New Covenant of Grace (abundant favors & earthly blessings to us)

    • Not knowing that the blood of the sinless Jesus was paid to cleanse us from all our sins

  • Examine yourself- if judge yourself, we can decide to change on the inside

    • This will affect our outside behavior (how we talk & act)

    • Be honest with yourself

      • This will change you blaming others or being defensive to every little tiny bit of criticism

  • Not discerning (recognizing, understanding) the Lord’s body

  • THIS REASON- not these reasons (writing to Christians)

    • If it’s God’s will for us to be healthy and not sick; why are their sick, in pain, and people who die prematurely who are believers in Christ

1 Corinthians 11:23-26 New King James Version

Institution of the Lord’s Supper

23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, [a]“Take, eat; this is My body which is [b]broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

  • First thing is, Jesus gives thanks

    • No matter what is going on in your life, start by giving thanks

    • Find something to thank the Lord about

  • He Broke the bread- His body was about to be broken for you and me

  • The cup seals us into the new covenant by Jesus blood

    • We are children of the New Covenant, the dispensation of Grace (Not the Law, and includes the gentiles)

  • “AS OFTEN”- not limited to just Sundays or 1st of the month

  • You are proclaiming the death of Jesus

    • Declaring this gospel (good news) of Jesus saves & heals (Grace)
