SERMON NOTES:

Baptized With the Holy Ghost: it’s a Promise & a Gift

Acts 2:38-39 - New King James Version

38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the [a]remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

  • Get saved/ born again- remission of sins (forgiveness, mercy, grace, eternal life)

  • Baptized in water (cut off our old life, living by our flesh)

  • You shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit

  • Holy Spirit is a promise for you and your children

Matthew 28:18-20 - New King James Version

18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go [a]therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” [b]Amen.

  • Disciples are the ones that baptize with water- the old man is gone buried, the flesh is not how we make decisions or live anymore

    • We are crucified with Christ

    • Our old sin ruled life is over

    • We cut-off the old man

Galatians 2:20 - New King James Version

20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

2 Corinthians 5:17 - New King James Version

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Matthew 3:11 - New King James Version

11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit [a]and fire.

Luke 3:16 - New King James Version

16 John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

  • Jesus is the one who baptizes you with the Holy Spirit/ Fire

  • If you have been born again, ask Jesus to baptize you

1 John 5:7-8 - New King James Version

For there are three that bear witness [a]in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.

  • 3 witnesses in heaven (Trinity)

    • The Word is Jesus (John1:1 & John 1:14)

  • 3 witnesses in the earth: Holy Spirit, water baptism, the blood

    • Water- old man is cut off, dead & buried

    • The blood- salvation Revelation 12:11 New King James Version

they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony,

    • Spirit- receive the Holy Ghost & Power

Acts 19:1-7 - New King James Version

19 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”

So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”

And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?”

So they said, “Into John’s baptism.”

Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. Now the men were about twelve in all.

  • Question for you: Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?

    • Did you receive the gift from the Father?

    • Did you ask Jesus to baptize you with Holy Ghost with fire (power)?

  • They accepted Jesus as Savior, only requirement to receiving the Holy Spirit

  • Power comes- speak in other tongues (proof) and prophesied

Acts 11:15

15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning.

  • Initiation to receive the Holy Spirit- as I speak we believe the Holy Spirit will fall on you
