VIRTUAL SERMON:

SERMON NOTES:

Peace and Rest

Romans 5:1 - New Living Translation

Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.

  • Saved by faith in Jesus’ performance not our own

  • Made right by faith

Colossians 1:20-22 - New Living Translation

20 and through him God reconciled everything to himself.  He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.

21 This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. 22 Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.

  • Reconcile- call back into union and friendship or favor after a disagreement

  • Identity in Christ- Holy and blameless

Romans 3:28 - New Living Translation

28 So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law.

  • Made righteous (2 cor 5:21)- didn’t earn it

    • Example I was made Chinese

Hebrews 4:1-2 - New King James Version

Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, [a]not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.

  • God promises us rest

  • Promises were made available to Israel, but they didn’t have faith to receive it (promise land)

    • Hearing the word alone did not profit them, Wondered in the desert for 40 years

    • Rest is available by faith

Hebrews 4:9-11 - New Living Translation

So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. 10 For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. 11 So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall.

  • Rest from your performance- trying to accomplish blessings in their own strength

    • Look what I did/ earned (self-righteousness)

  • God rested/ Sabbath Rest/ special Rest

  • Fail or fall by not believing or trusting that Jesus finished works are all we need

Matthew 11:28-29 - New Living Translation

28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

  • You find rest when you come to God/ Jesus/ Holy Spirit

    • He will teach you to rest, relax, chill

  • The choice is yours; He will not force you (free will)

  • You will receive rest for your mind and emotions

Philippians 4:6-7 - New Living Translation

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

  • Worry is a sin, meditating on the problem instead of God’s promise

  • Tell God what you need and thank Him for it ahead of time in faith

  • Then you will experience peace

1 Peter 5:6-11 - Amplified Bible

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God [set aside self-righteous pride], so that He may exalt you [to a place of honor in His service] at the appropriate time, casting all your cares [all your anxieties, all your worries, and all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares about you [with deepest affection, and watches over you very carefully]. Be sober [well balanced and self-disciplined], be alert and cautious at all times. That enemy of yours, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion [fiercely hungry], seeking someone to devour. But resist him, be firm in your faith [against his attack—rooted, established, immovable], knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being experienced by your brothers and sisters throughout the world. [You do not suffer alone.] 10 After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace [who imparts His blessing and favor], who called you to His own eternal glory in Christ, will Himself complete, confirm, strengthen, and establish you [making you what you ought to be]. 11 To Him be dominion (power, authority, sovereignty) forever and ever. Amen.

  • Pride when you try to solve your problems without God (I don’t need you)

  • Casting- give away and don’t take it back (resist temptation of meditating the problem)

  • Other believers are experiencing the same thing

  • God’s grace is working on us to complete us (His masterpiece) what we should be or ought to be.
