Combatting Unbelief

Intro: 

• You don’t have a faith problem as much as you have let Unbelief short circuit your Faith

• Talk about 4 kinds of Unbelief that derail people’s faith from working effectively.

• Ignorance, misbelief, natural, hardness of heart

Luke 17:6 - King James Version

6 And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.

• Faith size of a mustard seed will get the job done

• Speak your faith out loud

• Say what you want (all authority to tread on serpents given to you)

• Luke 10:19

1 John 5:4 - King James Version

4 For whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world: and this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith.

• First requirement be born again (new spiritual creature, in Christ)

• Our faith overcomes the world (brings victory)

Romans 12:3 - King James Version

3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

• Not a measure, but THE measure of faith 

• Same faith as Jesus, Paul, Peter

• Faith of the son of God (Gal 2:16 & 20)

2 Peter 1:1 - New Living Translation

1 This letter is from Simon[a] Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ.

I am writing to you who share the same precious faith we have. This faith was given to you because of the justice and fairness of Jesus Christ, our God and Savior.

• We receive e this same precious faith as Jesus WHEN we make Jesus our Lord and Savior (slave of Jesus Christ)

Mark 6:5-6 - New Living Translation

5 And because of their unbelief, he couldn’t do any miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them.  And he was amazed at their unbelief.

• Jesus in His own home town couldn’t do any miracles

Mark 9:17-24 - New Living Translation

17 One of the men in the crowd spoke up and said, “Teacher, I brought my son so you could heal him. He is possessed by an evil spirit that won’t let him talk. 18 And whenever this spirit seizes him, it throws him violently to the ground. Then he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid.[a] So I asked your disciples to cast out the evil spirit, but they couldn’t do it.”

19 Jesus said to them,[b] “You faithless people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”

20 So they brought the boy. But when the evil spirit saw Jesus, it threw the child into a violent convulsion, and he fell to the ground, writhing and foaming at the mouth.

21 “How long has this been happening?” Jesus asked the boy’s father.

He replied, “Since he was a little boy. 22 The spirit often throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him. Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.”

23 “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.”

24 The father instantly cried out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”

• Ever wonder why what you are believing for doesn’t seem to come to pass?

• Prayed for healing, get into a school, promotion, kids not acting right

• Jesus seemed mad at their lack of faith (or unbelief) 

• The disciples already in Mark 6 sent out two by two healing people and cast out demons 

• The subject today is Unbelief

Ignorant Unbelief

3 John 4 - New Living Translation

4 I could have no greater joy than to hear that my children are following the truth.

John 8:32 - New Living Translation

32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

• The cure for ignorant unbelief is hear the and accept the Truth (bible says)

Mark 7:13 - New Living Translation

13 And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition. And this is only one example among many others.”

• Unwilling to let go of wrong teachings or traditions of men

• Example: golf instructor easier to teach a beginner than someone who has a bunch of bad habits over time (harder to be re-taught)

• Must get rid of wrong teachings and wrong beliefs first

• Cure, be willing to let go of misbeliefs to accept what the incorruptible seed of God’s word 

• Humbleness to God’s word as final authority

Natural Unbelief

Hebrews 5:13-14 - New King James Version

13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are [a]of full age, that is, those who by reason of [b]use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

• Fasting is like exercise for your five senses to discern good and evil

• Fasting helps you gain control over your body/ flesh; don’t let your body control you

1 Thessalonians 5:23 - New King James Version

23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify[a] you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

• Spirit is perfect (sealed like a vacuum with the Holy Ghost)

• Sin can’t affect Your righteousness in Jesus Christ

• Soul- mind, will, emotions, personality

• Every battle is won in the soul (2nd witness Deut 30:19, Matt 18:16)

• Can’t sin unless you think about it first (Isa 26:3 Phil 4:8)

• Renew your mind & cast down imaginations (suggestion thoughts that don’t line up with Jesus)

• Body- live in a body (earth suit, vehicle)

• Fast a meal sharpen your spiritual authority over your body

• Fast meat, sweets, drinks

• Prayer- Get in God’s presence in Prayer (faith)

• Spending time talking and listening to God, reading His word, worshipping and praising God

• Praying in tongues- goes against your carnal senses (makes no natural sense)

Mark 9:25-29 - New King James Version

25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more!” 26 Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him. And he became as one dead, so that many said, “He is dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose.

28 And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?”

29 So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer [a]and fasting.”

• Jesus wasn’t moved by the dumb spirit convulsing the boy (gnashing teeth, shaking, playing dead)

• Jesus grabbed the boys hand and pulled him up
