VIRTUAL SERMON

SERMON NOTES:

Receive the Holy Spirit

John 14:16-17 - New King James Version

16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another [a]Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

  • Don’t beg for the Holy Ghost-begging is unbelief

  • Ask in faith (shout with confidence) because the word says so

Acts 10:38 - New King James Version

38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

  • Holy spirit first then the power

Mark 16:17-20 - New King James Version

17 And these signs will follow those who [a]believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they[b] will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.

  • Believing in faith that signs will follow the word being preached

Luke 24:49 - New Living Translation

49 “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”

  • Does Father God break His promises?

  • Part of the Holy Spirit’s job is to fill you with power from heaven

Acts 1:4-5 - New Living Translation

4 Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. 5 John baptized with[a] water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

  • Holy Spirit is a gift; you receive a gift (don’t beg, its already promised to you)

Acts 1:8 - New Living Translation

8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

  • Receive it, take it (someone gives you something, you take it)

  • Respond by opening your mouth moving your tongue and vocal chord and speaking whatever supernatural sound the Lord gives you

  • Do not think with your head, lean not on your own understanding

    • Trust God and His word, He promised to give Holy Spirit to you

Acts 2:32-33 - New King James Version

32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore being exalted [a]to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.

  • First sermon after Holy Spirit (rushing wind); three thousand men believed

  • Received the promised gift of Holy Spirit (not begged, didn’t wait, received)

  • People heard evidence of the Holy Spirit by speaking in tongues, different then being led and guided by his inner voice

Acts 10:44-46 - New King James Version

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 45 And [a]those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.

  • Non jews received the gift of the Holy Spirit

  • Speaking in tongues was evidence to the Jews that the Lord came to save the non jews

  • Remember Mark these signs will follow them that believe

Acts 8:12-17 - New King James Version

12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized13 Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized he continued with Philip, and was amazed, seeing the miracles and signs which were done.  14 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

  • Believed in Jesus and were water baptized.

  • Peter and John laid hands on the Samaritans to receive the Holy Spirit

Acts 19:1-7 - New King James Version

19 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”

So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”

And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?”

So they said, “Into John’s baptism.”

Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesiedNow the men were about twelve in all.

Acts 9:17 - New King James Version

17 And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord [a]Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

  • He laid hands on Paul to receive the Holy Spirit

1 Corinthians 14:18 - New King James Version

18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;

  • Quote from Paul
