SERMON NOTES:

Receive God’s Love

Communion Reading:

Romans 5:5-11 - New Living Translation

And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. 10 For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. 11 So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.

  • Receive God’s Love given to us by the Holy Spirit

  • God demonstrated His great Love (for sinners) by sacrificing His Only son (Abraham/ Isaac shadow of what to come)

  • We are made right in God’s sight

    • You were made that way, righteous

    • In God’s sight (not your spouse, parents, neighbor’s sight)

  • Jesus made us friends of God (peace, reconciled, restored relationship)

John 3:16-18 - Passion Translation

6 For here is the way God loved the world—he gave his only, unique Son as a gift.  So now everyone who believes in him  will never perish but experience everlasting life.

17 “God did not send his Son into the world to judge and condemn the world, but to be its Savior and rescue it!  18So now there is no longer any condemnation for those who believe in him, but the unbeliever already lives under condemnation because they do not believe in the name of the only Son of God.

1 Corinthians 13:1-3 - New King James Version

13 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body [a]to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

1 Corinthians 13:8 - New King James Version

Love never fails.

1 Corinthians 13:13 - New King James Version

13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Galatians 5:6 - New King James Version

6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.

1 John 4:9-11 - New King James Version

In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

1 John 4:14-17 - New King James Version

14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.

17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world.

Deuteronomy 1:26-28 - New King James Version

26 “Nevertheless you would not go up, but rebelled against the command of the Lord your God; 27 and you complained in your tents, and said, ‘Because the Lord hates us, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. 28 Where can we go up? Our brethren have [a]discouraged our hearts, saying, “The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.” ’

John 13:23 - New King James Version

23 Now there was [a]leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved.
