VIRTUAL SERMON

SERMON NOTES:

Peace: Jesus was our Christmas Gift

Luke 2:8-14 - New King James Version

Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And [a]behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a [b]manger.”

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:

14 “Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, goodwill[c] toward men!”

  • Until Jesus birth sin separated mankind from God

    • Our sin could have destroyed us and sent us to hell

    • Jesus came to take all our punishment for sins on Himself

    • Jesus’ punishment satisfied God’s wrath for our sins

  • There will come a time in everyone’s life that they will realize, “I need a Saviour.”

    • People will run out of money, health, power, influence to get them out of life’s problems

1 Corinthians 6:17 - New King James Version

17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.

  • Meaning of Christmas: the spirit of God is operating in my life

  • No more enmity between God and man

    • Adam & Eve’s sin separated mankind

  • Jesus was literally our peace that came from earth

    • His birth ended the war between God and sin

  • Jesus was born as God’s peace offering to mankind

Ephesians 2:6-9 - New Living Translation

For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ JesusSo God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus.

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.

  • We are united one spirit with Christ when we believe Jesus was sent to us from heaven to take away our sins

  • God wants to make you an example of His kindness to everyone around you by His grace

    • A gift is something you didn’t work for or deserve

  • Salvation (healing, protection, joy, triumph over trouble, provision) is a gift from God

    • Not a reward for good things you have done (works-based religion)

    • A gift is not something we have to beat ourselves up to earn

    • On your best day, you don’t deserve God’s grace

    • Receive His gift by faith

Romans 5:1-2 - New King James Version

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

  • Christmas gift- because of Jesus we have access to God

  • We have full access to His undeserved favor without having to work for it

Conclusion:

  • We had no access to God before Jesus was sent to the earth as the earth’s Christmas gift (God so loved the world He gave)

  • Christmas gifts Jesus bought: Hope deliverance from sin, deliverance from God’s wrath, Holy Spirit to guide us through life, triumph over opposition

  • We have to accept these gifts by faith that Jesus was our peace offering between God and man
