VIRTUAL SERMON

SERMON NOTES:

Why Do We Speak in Tongues?

Intro:  The Holy Spirit is not speaking in tongues and speaking in tongues in the Holy Spirit

  • How do you go to heaven?  Believe on Jesus- Him alone paid the price for sins.

  • If you have not been filled with the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues, but you believe on Jesus—YOU will still be in Heaven

Mark 16:17-20 - New King James Version

17 And these signs will follow those who [a]believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they[b] will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

19 So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.

  • Them that believe; they will speak in tongues

  • “they” will speak in tongues (plural)

  • “them” The Lord working with them (plural)

Acts 2:1-4 - New King James Version

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them [b]divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

  • All in one accord (unity)

  • They were ALL filled with the Holy Spirit

  • They ALL spoke with other tongues or other languages

  • Spirit gives you utterance (the words)

    • Holy Spirit provides the words

    • We provide the faith by moving our lips, opening our mouths and activating our vocal chords.

Acts 10:25-28 - New King James Version

25 As Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. 26 But Peter lifted him up, saying, “Stand up; I myself am also a man.” 27 And as he talked with him, he went in and found many who had come together. 28 Then he said to them, “You know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation. But God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean.

  • Against Jewish law for Peter, a Jew, to go to Cornelius house (Gentile)

    • Big no no to eat or keep company with non-Jewish people

Acts 10:44-46 - New King James Version

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.

  • Peter and the rest of the Jewish only believed after they heard the Gentiles speak in tongues

  • Speaking in tongues was a sign or evidence to Peter that the Gentiles received salvation and the Holy Ghost

Acts 10:47-48 - New King James Version

47 “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.

  • Gentiles received the Holy Spirit with speaking in tongues before they were water baptized

  • Criminal on the cross repented was not water baptized (being crucified), and Jesus said Today I will see you in paradise

Acts 10:34-35 - New King James Version

34 Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. 35 But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him.

  • Only pre-requisite is to make Jesus your Lord and Savior

  • The Lord is not prejudice; he only looks at someone’s heart

Romans 2:11 - New Living Translation

11 For God does not show favoritism.

1 Corinthians 14:4 - New King James Version

He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

  • Edifies- battery charger- builds himself up spiritually

  • Spiritual re-charge – by faith we speak in tongues

1 Thessalonians 5:23 - New King James Version

23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify[a] you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  • Not mental (soul) Not physical (the body), but spiritual charging

1 Corinthians 14:2 - New King James Version

For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

  • Speaking to God not man (heavenly language)

  • Speaking spirit to spirit (supernatural communication with God)

    • (God is a spirit) Worship Him in spirit and in truth

    • Example speak in tongues a few minutes then pause to receive or perceive spiritually what you just said

      • give your spirit time to communicate with your soul (mind, will, and emotions) 1 Cor 14:14 spirit prays but my mind unfruitful

  • Speaking mysteries, divine secrets

John 14:16-17 - New King James Version

16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another [a]Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

  • Reminds you the Holy Spirit is in you (His presence)

  • Abides with me forever (Not physical but spiritual but you know)

    • Can’t see the Holy Spirit, spiritual (believe what word says)

  • Tongues is not the beginning or the end; it’s a spiritual lifestyle

  • Continual stream- river into my life – never dries up

    • Ever conscious of His presence- affects the way I live

      • Reminder the Holy Spirit is in you

    • Speaking in tongues is fellowship with God-Holy Spirit
