VIRTUAL SERMON

SERMON NOTES:

Overcoming Shame

Shame: is an emotion (feeling) that tries to keep us in condemnation

  • Weapon of the enemy to keep you paralyzed from moving forward into God’s plan for your life (destiny)

  • Consciousness of guilt or shortcoming (sin consciousness)

    • Thinking more on sin than on the finished work of Jesus

    • You should be ashamed of yourself

    • Get you to hide yourself, stay away from people (Adam & Eve)

  • Run into so many people that walk around burdened and weighed down from past sin they did or what someone else did to them

Romans 8:1-3 - New Living Translation

So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power[a] of the life-giving Spirit has freed you[b] from the power of sin that leads to death. The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature.[c] So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins.

1 Corinthians 6:17 - New Living Translation

17 But the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him.

2 Corinthians 5:21 - New Living Translation

21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

1 Peter 3:18 - New King James Version

18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,

Isaiah 50:6-7 - New Living Translation

I offered my back to those who beat me and my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard.  I did not hide my face from mockery and spitting.

Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced.
Therefore, I have set my face like a stone, determined to do his will.  And I know that I will not be put to shame.

  • Jesus willingly allowed Himself to be shamed in every possible way so we wouldn’t have to walk around in shame

  • Jesus gave His face to be beaten, spit on, even to have his facial hairs pulled out

Isaiah 53:4-6 - New Living Translation

Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God,
a punishment for his own sins!  But he was pierced for our rebellion,
crushed for our sins.  He was beaten so we could be whole.  He was whipped so we could be healed.  All of us, like sheep, have strayed away.
We have left God’s paths to follow our own.  Yet the Lord laid on him
    the sins of us all.

  • Jesus accepted the full punishment of God for oursin including rejection

Acts 2:38 - New Living Translation

38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 9:33 - Amplified Bible, Classic Edition

33 As it is written, Behold I am laying in Zion a Stone that will make men stumble, a Rock that will make them fall; but he who believes in Him [who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Him] shall not be put to shame nor be disappointed in his expectations.

Hebrews 4:16 - New King James Version

16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

  • Repent Quickly, run to the throne of Grace (run to Jesus)

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 - New Living Translation

Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. 10 That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

  • When I know I am weak, I thought of everything I know how to do, and still can’t accomplish get over the top of the mountain (problem/ circumstance).

  • When I humble myself before the Lord Almighty (submit to His word and His voice), He gets the Glory

    • I know it wasn’t me; it was Him working through me

    • His grace, when I am weak He is strong
