VIRTUAL SERMON

SERMON NOTES:

Battling Shame

Intro:  Feeling ashamed makes you feel unlovable, worthless, and incapable of fulfilling anything God calls you to do

  • Consciousness of guilt or shortcoming (sin consciousness vs righteousness consciousness)

    • Thinking more on sin than on the finished work of Jesus

  • Weapon of the enemy to keep you paralyzed from moving forward into God’s plan for your life (destiny)

  • Get you to hide yourself, stay away from people (Adam & Eve)

Isaiah 54:4-5 - New Living Translation

“Fear not; you will no longer live in shame.  Don’t be afraid; there is no more disgrace for you.  You will no longer remember the shame of your youth and the sorrows of widowhood.  For your Creator will be your husband; the Lord of Heaven’s Armies is his name!  He is your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, the God of all the earth.

  • Shame is a form of fear (cousin) says fear NOT

  • Forget your past sins; no longer remember the shame (get out of sin consciousness)

Isaiah 54:9-10 - New Living Translation

“Just as I swore in the time of Noah that I would never again let a flood cover the earth,
so now I swear that I will never again be angry and punish you.  10 For the mountains may move and the hills disappear, but even then my faithful love for you will remain.
My covenant of blessing will never be broken,” says the Lord, who has mercy on you.

  • Jesus is your Redeemer (blood paid the price)

  • God’s not mad at you; what Jesus did at the cross was enough to pay for all the sins of the world combined.

    • Jesus became the object of shame for OUR sin

    • Delivered from shame and its consequences.

  • He has mercy on you-

Proverbs 11:2 - Amplified Bible, Classic Edition

When swelling and pride come, then emptiness and shame come also, but with the humble (those who are lowly, who have been pruned or chiseled by trial, and renounce self) are skillful and godly Wisdom and soundness.

  • When we carry the burden of shame around, we are walking in pride

    • Pride- without God

      • Not believing what God says on the matter; believing your feelings, past experiences, other people say, current circumstances are too much

  • What does Gods word say about the matter?

    • Be determined to live by the word and the guidance of the Holy Ghost living and abiding in you (never leave you or forsake you)

Isaiah 55:6-7 - Amplified Bible, Classic Edition

Seek, inquire for, and require the Lord while He may be found [claiming Him by necessity and by right]; call upon Him while He is near.  Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the Lord, and He will have love, pity, and mercy for him, and to our God, for He will multiply to him His abundant pardon.

  • Call upon the Lord for forgiveness

  • Return to the Lord for Love, pity, and mercy

  • Mercy- don’t experience the judgement you deserve (example hell)

  • Multiply His abundant pardon (like it never happened)

    • Focus on the voice of mercy NOT the voice of the enemy trying to shame us.

Acts 10:43-44 - Amplified Bible, Classic Edition

43 To Him all the prophets testify (bear witness) that everyone who believes in Him [who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Him, giving himself up to Him] receives forgiveness of sins through His name.  44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all who were listening to the message.

  • No sin that God is not powerful enough to deal with

  • Your sines are just not atoned for (covered up), but your sins our obliterated (completely gone like they never existed)

  • Believing what Jesus has already done is enough (you don’t have to perform (earn it) mercy and grace)

Hebrews 8:12 - Amplified Bible, Classic Edition

12 For I will be merciful and gracious toward their sins and I will remember their deeds of unrighteousness no more.

  • God is so merciful and doesn’t even remember your sin; God doesn’t even see your sins anymore

  • Put your focus on what God says about sin, mercy, and grace

  • Since you No longer carry sin in your spirit anymore; there is no need to carry shame anymore

Conclusion: What to do when you sin

  1. Repent quickly (turn the other way for mercy & forgiveness)

  2. Receive His forgiveness by Faith (not works/behavior/performance)

  3. Continue to stand in your righteousness in Christ

  4. Spend time meditating on your righteousness & holiness nature in Christ (Righteousness consciousness)

  5. Sin will become less attractive.

  6. Dressed head to toe in white; you don’t want to clothes and shoes dirty with sin
