SUNDAY SERMON

SERMON NOTES:

Receive the Holy Spirit

Intro:

Most of the Christians I grew up with believed they received the Holy Spirit when they received salvation and there are others that say you haven't had the Holy Spirit unless you have the evidence of speaking in tongues.

There are two separate different experiences.  I would say one is the Easter Sunday ( Christ Resurrection) encounter and the other is the Pentecost Sunday (Christ Ascended glorified) encounter.

John 20:19-22 - Amplified Bible, Classic Edition

19 Then on that same first day of the week, when it was evening, though the disciples were behind closed doors for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace to you!  20 So saying, He showed them His hands and His side. And when the disciples saw the Lord, they were filled with joy (delight, exultation, ecstasy, rapture).  21 Then Jesus said to them again, Peace to you! [Just] as the Father has sent Me forth, so I am sending you.

22 And having said this, He breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit!

  • Disciples passed from old testament believers to Easter Sunday Believers (New Testament Believers)

    • People born before Jesus, believed in future tense the messiah was coming

    • Compared to us we look back in time over 2000 years ago upon Jesus finished works the past to receive our salvation

    • Inbreathed spirit resulting in LIFE (eternal Life)

      • Lacked direction for ministry, made no impact on the city (Jerusalem), and Jesus told them wait there is more

Romans 10:9 - New King James Version

that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Luke 24:46-49 - New King James Version

46 Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, [a]and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And you are witnesses of these things. 49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city [b]of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

  • Easter Sunday Experience (repentance and remission of sins)

  • Jesus said there was more: The Promise of the Father

    • Endued with POWER from on high (Pentecost Sunday encounter)

Acts 1:4-5 - New King James Version

And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

  • Wait on the Promise of the Father (they were already Easter Sunday believers)

  • Water baptism immersed in Water (dipped)

  • Holy Spirit baptism rains down on us like a waterfall (fell on them)

    • Pentecost Sunday encounter

Acts 1:8 - New King James Version

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be [a]witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

  • Power to witness for Jesus

  • Power for Ministry direction and impact the city

  • Before the Holy Spirit go to the temple praising God, but no direction for ministry (Peter went fishing)

John 7:37-39 - New King James Version

37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those [a]believing in Him would receive; for the [b]Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

  • Outpouring of Holy Ghost (speaking in tongues)

  • Matt 12:34 abundance of your heart mouth speaks

Acts 2:1-4 - New King James Version

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all [a]with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them [b]divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

  • Important to have unity in the church (one accord)

    • All the disciples, Peter, Mary, and all Jesus brothers in the upper room (acts 1:12-14)

  • You do the speaking Holy Spirit gives the words (utterance)

  • They are all in the upper room (not in the street converting people in other languages still speaking as the Spirit gave them utterance)

Acts 2:16-18 - New King James Version

16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams.  18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy.

Acts 2:32-33 - New King James Version

32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore being exalted [a]to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.

  • Pentecost Sunday encounter; Jesus glorified at the right hand of the Father

  • Received the promise

  • Now you see and hear (tongues) overflow the disciples now received supernatural POWER (outpouring Spirit) overflow for others

    • Boldness to witness

    • Insight to scripture (to minister) direction from ministry

    • Impact the city

Acts 8:14-17 - New King James Version

14 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

  • They received Jesus as Lord (Easter experience)

  • Peter & John laid hands on them to receive the Holy Spirit (outpouring Pentecost experience)

Acts 10:44-48 - New King James Version

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 45 And [a]those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.

Then Peter answered, 47 “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.

Acts 19:1-6 - New King James Version

19 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”

So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”

And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?”

So they said, “Into John’s baptism.”

Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord JesusAnd when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

Mark 16:17-18 - New King James Version

17 And these signs will follow those who [a]believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they[b] will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Luke 11:10-13 - New King James Version

10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 If a son asks for [a]bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

Matthew 3:11 - King James Version (john the Baptist)

11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

1 Corinthians 13:1 - King James Version

13 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

  • Speaking in languages of angels and men

1 Corinthians 14:18 - New King James Version

18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;

  • Paul speaks in tongues, receives spiritual revelation to write new testament
