SUNDAY SERMON

SERMON NOTES:

I Believe I Am the Righteousness of God

Hebrews 5:12-13 - New King James Version

12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the [a]oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.

  • Immature Christians are defined by being unskilled in the word of righteousness

Romans 4:3-5 - New King James Version

For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was [a]accounted to him for righteousness.” Now to him who works, the wages are not counted [b]as grace but as debt.

But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness,

  • Faith in God made Abraham righteous in God’s eyes

James 2:23 - New Living Translation

23 And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.”[a] He was even called the friend of God.[b]

  • Righteous and God’s friend by faith

Romans 10:3-4 - New King James Version

For they (Jews/ people who follow the Law) being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

  • Following the Law makes you ignorant of God’s righteousness

    • James says if you broke one command you broke them all

  • Christ is the END of the law

Philippians 3:9 - New Living Translation

and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ.[a] For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.

  • Self-effort, self-performance, behavior (Be good to get good)

  • Faith in Jesus performance not our own

  • Rest in what Jesus has done is more than enough

Galatians 3:6-10 - New Living Translation

In the same way, “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.”[aThe real children of Abraham, then, are those who put their faith in God.

What’s more, the Scriptures looked forward to this time when God would make the Gentiles right in his sight because of their faith. God proclaimed this good news to Abraham long ago when he said, “All nations will be blessed through you.”[bSo all who put their faith in Christ share the same blessing Abraham received because of his faith.

10 But those who depend on the law to make them right with God are under his curse, for the Scriptures say, “Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the commands that are written in God’s Book of the Law.”[c]

Galatians 5:3-4 - New Living Translation

I’ll say it again. If you are trying to find favor with God by being circumcised, you must obey every regulation in the whole law of Moses. For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God’s grace.

Romans 10:8-12 - New Living Translation

In fact, it says, “The message is very close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart.”[a]

And that message is the very message about faith that we preach: If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. 11 As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.”[b12 Jew and Gentile[c] are the same in this respect. They have the same Lord, who gives generously to all who call on him.

  • Confession with your lips that you are the righteousness of God
