Humble Yourself with Prayer and Fasting
Introduction: Pride vs Humbleness
Best example is Lucifer (angel in heaven) vs Jesus
Lucifer tried to exalt himself, be like God- Pride
Got kicked out of heaven
Philippians 2:5-11 - New King James Version
5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it [a]robbery to be equal with God, 7 but [b]made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Jesus Humbled himself- free will God the Father did not force Jesus
God exalts Jesus after Jesus humbled Himself
James 4:10 - Amplified Bible
10 Humble yourselves [with an attitude of repentance and insignificance] in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you [He will lift you up, He will give you purpose].
Our responsibility to humble ourselves
His job is to exalt us
1 Peter 5:5-6 - New King James Version
5 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for
“God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.”
6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time,
God resists, comes against, opposes the prideful
When prideful and arrogant you set yourself in opposition to God
You will lose that battle every time
Prayer and fasting gets us out the way of pride
When you humble yourself, you put yourself in position for more grace
Grace magnet- mercy, forgiveness, favor, blessing, manifested promises
Psalm 35:13 - New American Standard Bible
13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth; I humbled my soul with fasting, But my prayer kept returning to [a]me.
Humble soul (I think, I want, I feel- where ego exists in our soul)
Fasting & prayer- God appointed way to humble ourselves
Christian attorney said I will try this- gave his body another day of fasting
Fasting- Having nothing to eat for spiritual growth
Matthew 18:3-4 - New American Standard Bible
3 and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you [a]change and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 So whoever will humble himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
