SERMON NOTES:

Fasting to Releasing Holy Spirit Power in Me

Intro:

Fasting is voluntarily not allowing oneself to eat (sometimes drink) for spiritual growth & purposes.

Fasting crucifies the flesh and carnal mind to release the Holy Spirit’s power withing me.

  • Fasting changes me in order that I can be in a better position to receive what God has already given me

    • Removes pride that comes from carnal mind

Acts 1:8 - New King James Version

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be [a]witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Ephesians 3:20 - New King James Version

20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,

  • There is Holy Spirit Power in us

    • How do Christians release this Power?

Galatians 5:16-17 - New King James Version

16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

  • Capitol “S” – Holy Spirit

  • War inside you between your flesh and Holy Spirit

    •  desires of body, old nature thinking and your brand new spirit made in Christ’s image led by the Holy Spirit

Romans 8:6-7 - New King James Version

For to be [a]carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the [b]carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.

  • Carnal mind against God- not controlled by the body’s appetites

  • pride opposite of humbling oneself to leading of Holy Spirit

    • I think, I want, I feel (carnal nature works)

1 Corinthians 9:25-27 - New Living Translation

25 All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. 26 So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. 27 I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.

  • Paul disciplined himself with fasting & prayer

    • Fasting disciplines your flesh & old nature thinking

    • Prayer keeps you sensitive to the Holy Spirit leading inside you

  • Fasting a way to keep your carnal flesh and carnal mind crucified with Christ

Luke 4:1-2 - New Living Translation

Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness,[awhere he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.

  • Fasting is voluntarily not allowing oneself to eat (sometimes drink) for spiritual growth & purposes.

Luke 4:14 - New Living Translation

14 Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit’s power. Reports about him spread quickly through the whole region.

  • Filled with Holy Spirit’s power

  • No miracles were done in Jesus life up until this point (before this fast)

    • Is this a coincidence?  Supernatural release of power

Jonah 3:5-10 - New Living Translation

The people of Nineveh believed God’s message, and from the greatest to the least, they declared a fast and put on burlap to show their sorrow.

When the king of Nineveh heard what Jonah was saying, he stepped down from his throne and took off his royal robes. He dressed himself in burlap and sat on a heap of ashes. Then the king and his nobles sent this decree throughout the city:

“No one, not even the animals from your herds and flocks, may eat or drink anything at all. People and animals alike must wear garments of mourning, and everyone must pray earnestly to God. They must turn from their evil ways and stop all their violence. Who can tell? Perhaps even yet God will change his mind and hold back his fierce anger from destroying us.”

10 When God saw what they had done and how they had put a stop to their evil ways, he changed his mind and did not carry out the destruction he had threatened.

  • Sinful non Jewish City believed God – one prophet preached for 3 days

  • King humbles himself and declares a fast like no other before (food, drink, and animals)

    • Pray earnestly to God

    • Fast & pray turns people from their evil ways (crucify the flesh)
