SUNDAY SERMON

SERMON NOTES:

Why are believers not walking in the victory over the enemy?

  • Haven’t spent enough time studying the word

  • Meditating on the word to renew their minds to the righteousness of God

  • Don’t know who they really are in Christ; their new creation identity

Revelation 12:11 - Modern English Version

11 They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony,
and they loved not their lives unto the death.

  • Blood of the Lamb

  • Words of Your mouth- Say what God says about you and your situation

  • Commitment- number one goal is to be in God’s will (not living)

Hebrews 9:13-14 - Modern English Version

13 For if the blood of bulls and goats, and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies so that the flesh is purified, 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

2 Corinthians 5:17 - Amplified Bible

17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ [that is, grafted in, joined to Him by faith in Him as Savior], he is a new creature [reborn and renewed by the Holy Spirit]; the old things [the previous moral and spiritual condition] have passed away. Behold, new things have come [because spiritual awakening brings a new life].

  • Explain what happens at the new birth

  • Real repentance is changing what we believe (changing your mind about your identity and who you really are)

Romans 12:1-3 - The Message

12 1-2 So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

I’m speaking to you out of deep gratitude for all that God has given me, and especially as I have responsibilities in relation to you. Living then, as every one of you does, in pure grace, it’s important that you not misinterpret yourselves as people who are bringing this goodness to God. No, God brings it all to you. The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by what he does for us, not by what we are and what we do for him.

  • Focus on what God has done and is doing for us, renew your mind in Christ scriptures

    • Not what we do for Him or have done for Him (works based religion)

2 Corinthians 5:21 - Amplified Bible, Classic Edition

21 For our sake He made Christ [virtually] to be sin Who knew no sin, so that in and through Him we might become [[a]endued with, viewed as being in, and examples of] the righteousness of God [what we ought to be, approved and acceptable and in right relationship with Him, by His goodness].

  • Performance based mentality cuts you off from God’s grace

  • Your good deeds can you not put you in right standing with God

  • Choosing to embrace the truth about being the righteousness of God (identity).

Romans 5:17 - Modern English Version

17 For if by one man’s trespass death reigned through him, then how much more will those who receive abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

  • Only way out of this mindset is to believe that Jesus already made us right with God

  • Free to live a life of Grace instead of living with sin consciousness

  •   Right believing leads to right living

Romans 8:1-3 - Amplified Bible, Classic Edition

Therefore, [there is] now no condemnation (no adjudging guilty of wrong) for those who are in Christ Jesuswho live [and] walk not after the dictates of the flesh, but after the dictates of the Spirit.

For the law of the Spirit of life [which is] in Christ Jesus [the law of our new being] has freed me from the law of sin and of death.

For God has done what the Law could not do, [its power] being weakened by the flesh [[a]the entire nature of man without the Holy Spirit]. Sending His own Son in the guise of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, [God] condemned sin in the flesh [[b]subdued, overcame, [c]deprived it of its power over all who accept that sacrifice],

  • Sin consciousness will cause you to sin more

  • An evil conscious is more aware of sin than righteousness- extremely hard to accept God’s eternal forgiveness through Jesus and unable to let go of their shortcomings

  • Judgy Christians - wrong believing leads to wrong living

    • A person’s behavior will change when they change the way they think about themselves and what they think about themselves.

    • Transformation from the inside out

Conclusion:

The truth is that your recreated spirit is identical to God.  We must settle the issue of identity within ourselves first before there will be a changed behavior manifested on the outside for others to see. (manifested promises happen through Christ in you when you identify yourself as being in Christ)
